Proposal 2 states that the legislature must provide a minimum of 25% of the Secretary of State’s budget, and that the commissioners shall make a minimum of 25% of the Governor’s salary, with no process of establishing a maximum. Rather than creating a 4th Branch government with a blank check, these tax dollars should be spent fixing our roads or educating our kids. Should Michigan voters approve a proposal which could lead to a select few individuals getting paid $1 million each at taxpayer expense?
Instead of leaving the redistricting process in the hands of individuals who are elected by the voters and accountable to them, Proposal 2 transfers exclusive power to 13 bureaucrats randomly selected by a partisan Secretary of State. Even in the face of serious misconduct, you would have no ability to hold them accountable.
Proposal 2 adds 3,200 words to the Michigan Constitution. For some perspective, the Declaration of Independence, US Constitution and Bill of Rights combined add up to just over 6,300 words. This complex, confusing mess doesn’t belong in our constitution.
Far from banning just politicians, Proposal 2 specifically bans voters - hundreds of thousands of them actually – because of their civic involvement or, even more unfairly, because they are related to someone who is active in public service. This blatant discrimination should not be written into our constitution.
Protect your vote.
Proposal 2 isn't the solution its supporters claim it to be.
It's a costly and complex mess that would place unaccountable bureaucrats, chosen at random, in charge of drawing your district maps.
It would enshrine discrimination into our state constitution. It would provide no checks and balances on runaway government spending - wasting money that could go towards our roads, or educating our kids. The choice is simple.
Protect our Constitution. Protect your vote.
